ACHIEVEMENT OBJECTIVES:
Understanding about science (Nature of Science)
Students will appreciate that scientists ask questions about our world that lead to investigations and that open-mindedness is important
Properties and changes of matter (Material World)
L1/2: Observe, describe, and compare physical and chemical properties of common materials and changes that occur when materials are mixed, heated, or cooled.
L3/4: Group materials in different ways, based on the observations and measurements of the characteristic chemical and physical properties of a range of different materials.
L3/4: Compare chemical and physical changes.
BLACK SNAKE SCIENCE EXPERIMENT
MY HYPOTHESIS:
i think that the sugar and baking soda and methylated spirits will cause the sand to burn and the baking soda will make it rise
MATERIALS:
- methylated spirits
- baking soda
- sugar
- lighter
METHOD:
1 put the sand in the bowl and make sure its flat
2 put the methylated spirits on the sand
3 mix the baking soda and sugar together in the cup
4 poor the sugar and baking onto the sand
5 put the baking soda onto the middle the middle of the sand
6 now get some more methylated spirit on the sand
7 and lite it on fire
7 and lite it on fire
OBSERVATIONS:
The sugar started to burn and the sand started to rise from the help of the baking soda. And it split it kinda like two black snakes coming out of the bowl. Sometimes you have to add more spirits to it to make it rise more. My hypothesis is correct because I said it would rise because of baking sugar.
DIAGRAM:
CONCLUSIONS:
That the baking soda and sugar mix causes the sand to rise when lit on fire
my hypothesis is correct because I said in my hypothesis the sand rises because of the baking soda and it did.
